Words, Bonds, & Precious Time

I'm sure we are all familiar with the saying; your word is your bond.

This is so true and a lot of times we do not keep our word. Whether we realize it or not, this becomes a habit.

How many times have you said you will be somewhere or do something and you don’t do it? We must ask ourselves what’s keeping us from doing so?

Here are some basic reasons why keeping our word would be awesome ☺

  • Self confidence is built and a sense of accomplishment is met

  • Not doing what we set out to do keeps us in a state of guilt or even worse, stress as tasks pile up one after another

  • You are more likely to build trust, and others are more likely to keep their word for you

  • It helps build good character

  • You won’t miss out on new, possibly amazing experiences and opportunities

Sometimes we shy away from commitments due to fear.

Saying you will make that call, go to that interview, start that business, or even speak to that person who you admire from afar are not mundane tasks, just do it.

Take a leap and do it! We must first keep our words to ourselves before we can keep our word to anyone else.

“Follow your instincts and stop putting things off. Be bold in who you are!”

Short Story Time ☺

A perfect example of this is how long it took me to leave my last job. I was exhausted working the night shift and managing to muster enough energy to take care of my beautiful one year old daughter when I got home. I made a promise to myself to find a new job right away that didn’t require me to work nights or overtime for that matter.

It took me over a year to even make it to my first interview. But guess what? I got the job at the first interview I attended. It was so surreal and I thought to myself, I could’ve had the job a long time ago but I didn’t keep my word to go at it right away.

I convinced myself every time that I would try the following week, or the next, or the next to set up interviews. Before I knew it, I spent a whole year at a job that made me miserable and I was missing out on precious time with my princess. It was my own fear of the unknown, fear that I would fall on my face during the interview, not meet the requirements, and the excuses go on and on that kept me that long. What precious time I wasted. Had I just kept my word to myself and took a leap of faith I would’ve moved on from that job a long time ago.

Precious Time

I know, that just like me, you’ve had those days where you come home from work or it’s your day off, or whatever the situation may be, and we say to ourselves “Oh no biggie, I’ll just get it done tomorrow.”

That’s another mistake we make and overwhelm ourselves today with tasks that could’ve been done yesterday. Then if we don’t come around to doing what we said, tasks pile up and stress begins.

I’m writing this to you!

-The student who got a C on a paper because of waiting until the last minute and scrambling to write it, when it could have easily been an A had you wrote it a week ago like you told yourself you would

- The athlete who missed a spot on the team for missing a practice session recruiters happened to attend, because he felt missing one practice wasn’t a big deal and he could catch up the next day

-The woman who didn’t meet her future prince charming because she canceled the event (I personally like this one, It’s so dreamy) due to her fear of socializing.

…Or simply the person who hasn’t cleaned up all week, now the house is a total wreck, and you don’t know where to start, frustrating! The list goes on and on and on. I’m sure we all can relate.

Let’s make a commitment starting today to keep our word no matter what!

A (fun) Bitter to Better Technique

  1. Buy some post its (I like colorful ones because bright colors are known to help liven your mood, plus this technique is meant to be fun)

  2. Write down the commitments you made for the week on individual post its, for example; I’ll go the gym on Friday before work!

  3. On the back of that same post it, write a compliment like… YOU’RE AWESOME, YOU ROCK, YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL, YOU’RE SUCCESSFUL, etc. you get the point

  4. Place it on your mirror or computer screen (somewhere you will see it constantly)

  5. When you keep your word and do what you said on the post it, turn the post it around and place it where you can see it for the day as a reminder of how awesome you are for keeping your word.

  6. If you don’t then just keep the post where it is as a reminder to try again, don’t bring it down until you have done that task

  7. Don’t be so hard on yourself and give it another try when you miss a word or two, the key is to start a habit of keeping your word by default

Until Next Time

Just like any other habit, in order to start on the path of it becoming a default action, we must practice and do it constantly.

Make a conscious decision to be that person who always keeps their word, and meets deadlines and so forth. It’s just such an awesome attribute.

I give you, My Readers, my word to post at the very minimum, one blog entry per week. I will hold myself to it ☺…Thanks for stopping by.
