Feeling Anxious and Taking Control

I have dealt with some bad cases of anxiety and I’d be lying if I said that I don’t now.

From riding the trains in NYC and fearing, well…I don’t know, an explosion or something (which is why I cut back from watching the news)…to just laying in bed at night with my mind racing over a million miles per minute about everyday worries like, high rent, or whether I will have time to run my errands, meet a deadline, etc.

These obsessive thoughts are just frustrating and unwarranted, even to me.

Point being I have experienced that ever annoying feeling of anxiousness and I’ve tried to combat it.

Notice When It’s Serious

The condition stems from over worrying about things or feeling a sense of fear.

So I’m here to tell you, you’re not alone. There are a lot of people that go through this especially when they feel their backs are up against a wall. Some cases are more severe than others.

There are moments where the anxiety is fast and completely gone once the situation is over, for example an interview, a first date, a competition, etc.

Then there are the very scary and uncontrollable forms of anxiety that can cause panic attacks and really affect your everyday life.

This level of anxiety more than likely has a root, like a traumatic experience. Being that it’s on such a personal level, it can become almost impossible to control. Feeling helpless is normal when you experience anxiety and it can also lead to depression with time. It’s highly recommended that if you find it hard to control the attacks of anxiety, look for professional help and support.

A Bitter to Better Technique

Meditation does wonders and I’m not talking about sitting on the floor with your legs crossed humming to some yoga music (if that’s your preference then by all means do that)

-Most people have some sort of belief system, whether it’s God, the Buhda, or it can simply be the power of the universe, tune into that belief and pray, visualize, find a state of relaxation, reach a level of nothingness. Clear of thoughts.

-Visualization is the practice of leaving your current place of thought and traveling to a more pleasant place in your mind where you are doing and feeling what would make you happy. This practice can calm your current state of anxiousness. I visualize my daughters smile.

-YouTube is a great source and it has worked for me, simply because I was such a newbie at meditation, I didn’t know where to start. You can search Meditation for beginners, pick one, put some headphones on and go for it.

Other things you can try

-Replace the thought with another thought on purpose as soon as you notice that your current thoughts are starting to make you feel anxious.

-Put some music on, it’s known to be a game changer when it comes to changing your mode in a moment or so. Preferably, choose songs that bring good memories or are upbeat and motivational.

-Exercise is always a go, for every health reason, even mental, exercising triggers the brain into a feel good state.

-Do some research on your particular symptoms and find other techniques that suite you individually. Knowledge is always good and can help you better understand what it is you’re dealing with internally.

-Find support in friends and family as much as possible. Chances are someone closer to you than you think might be experiencing the same thing. People feel ashamed and don’t open up often, but this doesn’t have to be something you deal with alone.

This too shall pass and it isn’t easy dealing with the sudden emotions and overwhelming state of anxiety. Do not ignore it or feel ashamed of it.

Until Next Time

Just like any other habit, in order to start on the path of it becoming a default action, we must practice and do it constantly.

Do not fret and beat yourself up about the small things, all things pass, even fear.

If you feel the anxiety is beyond your personal control then seek professional help.

I’m speaking from a personal level and am in no way certified to give you professional advice.

If you are anything like me, then you will not be into taking any form of medication. Will power is a weapon in combating this condition and you might not need any medication, but it wouldn’t hurt to at least have someone to talk to.

What I can say and guarantee, is that you are not alone. There are ways to treat this condition before it worsens. I wish you luck and peace of mind. Thank you for stopping by.

Please leave your opinion and comments below. Feel free to share a time when you experienced something in your life that made you bitter but you transformed it to something better.
